Does the HR Profession need "Global HR Standards"?
"The International Organization for Standardization has ratified a proposal from the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) to establish a group charged with creating global HR standards" ~ HRMagazine, April 2011.
What do you think about this? What will said standards do for the profession...for the industry...for our clients and our constituents? Is standardization good in this day and age? Is it long overdue? What kinds of standards should we have?

Charlie, given that the standards were blessed by ANSI, it is likely for larger companies the answer will be yes; however, smaller employers will simply be doing the best that they can.
Standardization is as good as the good its results. If it is an improvement, we should align ourselves. If it is not an improvement, what would be the point?
All things in moderation. Let's not lose our ability to create.
There are a wide variety of things in HR (hundreds in fact) which people "reinvent" all the time - like how to measure "time to hire" or "cost to hire." What the SHRM/ANSI groups are doing is trying to standardize a lot of these definitions and measures, so we can start to build common tools and benchmarks on how we measure and discuss various elements of HR. It's a great idea, as long as they stick to basic areas which are common across all organizations.
