Does web-based CRM work for larger organizations?
It seems like the general rule I am hearing is that web-based CRM solutions are great for smaller businesses and larger organizations should opt for more of a premise-based solution. I am a big fan of hosted solutions and wanted to get feedback on people's experiences with using web-based CRM solutions for larger organizations?

Yes. I work for EnterpriseWizard and as the name implies, we designed it to serve the needs of the enterprise with support for fully configurable business processes, granular access permissions, full auditability and thousands of concurrent users. For an example, see http://www.enterprisewizard.com/carestream-case-study.pdf
If you ever need to move the entire installation to an in-house Windows or Linux server, you can easily do so, but our largest customers generally prefer to let us do the hosting.
All the leading vendors should satisify your needs for scalability, so the key criteria are flexibility, cost, uptime guarantees, ease of integration, security and implementation time.
If you invite candidates to give a demo of their systems implementing the specific processes that you require, it should soon become clear which of us will best meet your needs. You can contact us at 650 587 8615 ext 1
In the world of ERP, the question is does size matter? The answer is no. The key to successful deployment of a Software as a service based ERP platform is scalability. If the SaaS provider has the ability to provide scalable database infrastructure than the user of that ERP system will experience no difference in system speed or function over a traditional hosted system. The argument could be made that the user will experience better speed and function over an inhouse system. And ultimately the costs associated with a SaaS ERP system will typically be lower over the long term.

A lot of it will have to do with how much customization you need to do, how complicated your business processes are, and whether you would like to integrate your CRM with other systems within your organization.
Take a look at this article for a quick overview of why you should go with an on-premise CRM if you are a larger organization: http://searchmanufacturingerp.techtarget.com/news/article/0,289142,sid193_gci... The article is about ERPs, but the concepts are the same, especially if you would like to tie the two together -- which would be the ultimate goal for most organizations. That way your sales/service employees and your back-office employees all have access to the same data and when an update is done in one system it is reflected across all.
Here is a document that can help you evaluate which choice, SaaS or On-Premise is right for your organization: http://www.interaction.com/pdf/articles/2009-04-searchCRM-SAAS.pdf
