Finance vs. Operations ERP Solutions
Ideally, an ERP system connects the company’s operations to its finances. Some think that ERP is great for handling front office operations and to properly handle the shop floor (manufacturing/warehousing) operations, you really need a MES system. Is this truly the case? Can we get what we need just from ERP or do we need both? What is the best way to determine that?

It is possible to make a quick assessment of what is truly needed by first looking at what is already in place and identify what is missing from the company. Most ERP's handle MES already and if they don't they handle the data that drives MES (which doesn't mean you need an MES system to integrate into your ERP). If the ERP has data on purchase orders, production orders and sales orders, then you can take that data and make use of it with Enterprise Add-On. We are working with a consultant who is using our application to support the entire production floor process without making any change the existing ERP system. Avoiding integration between an ERP and MES is a good thing for your company too. Let me know if I can provide any more information.

I think the answer becomes, "that depends". Particularly, that depends on the ERP and your needs. As Steve mentioned, a lot of the data you need likely exists in your ERP already and, if it doesn't, it may be possible to get modules custom-designed for your ERP already. For example, if you use ACCPAC or GP, there are a host of ISV's delivering solid extention modules for these ERP's, so you can likely get what functionality is still missing from a bolt-on module rather than undergoing the cost & effort of a full-fledged MES implementation.
I think Steve's initial comment is bang-on; determine your needs and find out what your current system CAN'T deliver - that will help you find out what your next step needs to be.
