Focus Research Insight: How do you get a background/overview on vendors?
In our most recent VoIP study, 20% of buyers cited Vendor Background/Overview as the most valuable information they look for in initial contact with vendors. But how do you synthesize a full picture of the vendor? User references? Brochures? Case studies? Asking reps? What's the best way to know the vendor is legitimately stable, reliable, and experienced with companies like yours? What else constitutes Vendor Background for you?

Jessica, "Technology is Great, Not So Sure About the Vendor" is a free white paper posted at my business web site and it lists many things you should do to make sure your vendor is worthy of being a your business partner. It's skewed towards the software industry, my specialty, but I'd say 70-80% applies to any vendor in any situation, from VOIP to home improvement. The web site is http://www.InterimTechExec.com if you'd like to take a look; the link is in the right column.
References and white papers are definitely great. I've never personally used them, but http://www.ramprate.com/ is right up your ally.
