Understand your requirements. Listen to vendors advice. Review your requirements based on this outside in perspective from the vendors in tandem with your initial requirements. Create a partnership with your chosen supplier/ vendor - don't keep them at arms length and do the typical buyer versus seller type of engagement. Don't screw suppliers to the wall on price, as this won't help the relationship - they have a job to do too! Keep an open mind. Have a plan. Have a budget. Be realistic about what you want and what you can afford. Finally - get board approval for any project before you start, otherwise there will be a great deal of work for all involved with no result at the end.
