Nortel filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the beginning of 2009. Nortel has a channel and support chain that will be able to maintain its gear in the future so you will likely be able to manage support contracts on existing equipment.
Most of the Nortel components divisions are being acquired for pennies on the dollar. Radware acquired the Alteon business. Avaya just acquired the enterprise business.
I would plan on replacing my Nortel equipment over the next three years. Look for cost justifications in lower power consumption, added features, and of course enhanced support, to justify a faster replacement cycle.
OnState has a cool solution to something like this--use what you've got; coninue to use your Nortel equipment, but layer SaaS-based OnState (http://www.on-state.com) on top of it to add new features and enable business presence (http://www.on-state.net/blog/?p=299) so that you're managing your people, and not your phones. Not only does this solution help you get the most value out of your existing investment, but it also prevents CAPEX for the foreseeable future.
Mitel has multiple solutions that can help you migrate to a new platform without the cost of replacing all existing equipment. We can show you how to transform any device (cell phone, home phone, or any other type of telephone), anywhere in the world, into your personal extension, so calls to your business number can ring on that phone. Combine this with the ability to make a call from any of these devices, securely through the Mitel Communications Director and you have effectively turned these devices into your personal extension – anywhere and everywhere.
