I have an idea for a product! What can I do if I have no manufacturing experience?

What are some tools or resources to use if I want to develop an and idea for a cool toy or gadget, especially if I have little to no experience in manufacturing, engineering or design?

I would first suggest evaluating the patentability of the product before anything else. Depending on the uniqueness and commercial appeal of the product, you may want to patent it to avoid a flood of copies grabbing market share.

Once you've determined if a patent, copyright, or other IP (Intellectual Property) protection is applicable, I would then recommend looking for a good company to license production rights to or partner with on production.

Be advised however, you should limit how much you information you publish about this product until you have determined the protection level you're hoping to obtain. If you publish certain information, you may reduce or eliminate your ability to obtain protection later. This is particularly true if you decide to look into international IP protection at a later date.

David Pressman in an IP lawyer who has authored and co-authored several great books on this topic. I'm working on several patents at the moment and have found his book titled "Patent It Yourself" (ISBN-13: 978-1413310580) to be very insightful.

John, there are several packaging companies you can work with who will help you most of your requirements. Depending on where you are as far as the product development, a company such as Stephen Gould can help you get it made and packaged through their network of contacts. Not sure about the engineering or design, but you could contact them and investigate what they can do for you. Hope this helps.
