How are back-to-school sales trending, in grocery, as we come into final stretch of season?
What factors impacting sales at supermarkets this year? What type of promotions are food retailers running to capture BTS spending? What retailers or retail formats are doing the best job in capturing BTS sales? Looking for any new unique type of retail promotions/offers running this season? What is the mood of BTS shopper the last week of August?

Hi Christina,
You asked about 6 different questions. Not sure I can answer them all, but I'll give it a go:
1) I'm not sure what grocery has to do with BTS unless you count their small office supplies aisle. So that part I have to say ???? to. I have not seen any BTS promos coming out of grocery at all. If you're looking for "lunchbox" type promotions, I really haven't seen them.
2) BTS is becoming a very "scushy" season because school starts so early in many parts of the country. In S Florida, the kids have been back to school for more than a week. So there are attempts to quantify the number, but apart from the obvious - school supplies and uniforms if the school requires them, it's not so easy to do. I mean would you buy new fall clothes in the beginning of August? Probably not.
3) On the East Coast, Irene will be putting a damper on the final week pre-Labor day. So the mood of shoppers in Dallas was "cranky from the heat," the mood on the East Coast was "paranoid of mass destruction," and so on.
However, just released data tells us consumer spending rose a bit in July. I would assume that will show as a continued trend in August.
Hope that helps.
