How are you embracing social media optimization (SMO)?

Is SMO replacing SEO? How is your marketing department embracing SMO and are you finding that it is more or less important than your SEO efforts?

Hi Laura
I'm finding that most f the social media work im doing falls under Social Media Optimization.
Looking and and reviewing things like;
onboarding
inapp notifications
social network integration
newsletters
blogs
link building
twitter
facebook
linkedin
forums
community
+more
We can make sure everything is integrated, consistent and targeted. I've seen good results with this strategy already and I think more and more companies who have started some social media work will be employing optimization specialists in the furure

I don't think SMO and SEO are essentialy different efforts so I don't beleive that one excludes or replaces the other.

But that is mainly because I have a strong view on SEO in the sense that for me SEO is no magical science but essentially generating quality and meaningfull content and distributing it with a strategy to your target audience hoping to get rewarded for this by good placement in search engines.

If we take SMO you don't do anything essentially different. You create a strategy on how to communicate your message to your target market in social networks.

For me SEO/SMO are individual parts of an integrated communication strategy. Neither functions well without efforts on both sides.

For me the essential difference between SEO and SMO is that SMO efforts try to get your brand found within specific networks and SEO works on getting all your content (web site/social network content) found from the outside.
And therefore they don't replace and exclude themself.

But you will find different valid opinions on that, which is good!
