For the companies with limited budget, word of mouth promotion of their employees counts a lot. The employees can be incentivized for promoting the brands / creating awareness / bringing more clients. Companies products should be sampled to the employees first and can be offered to them at the discounted prices. The happy employees can make a lot of difference.

For the companies with unlimited budgets there are infinete number of ways to create brand awareness.

Outside consultants are never a key, in my opinion. If you don't understand your brands and company then none of the outsiders can understand it either. The insiders are the best people to suggest the way forward for any company.

Get yourself out in the market place and talk sense.

Networking can help those on any budget create a buzz. Using local or national networking events and forums can be a good way of becoming a recognised industry figure and someone that is happy to give advice for free.

Write newsworthy articles, not sales pitches, and send out to local press. It may not work first time but the more you do and the more topical they are the more likely they are to work.

Sponsor a local event or college/university prize.

It takes resources to build brand awareness, so if your resource isn't money, it's got to be effort. All the suggestions above are great. Word of mouth has been shown to be one of the best ways to grow your business, so how do you get others to talk about you? Do something remarkable. Write and publish, speak. But you have to be passionate, show that you know what people need, that you care about them, that you can be trusted to do what's in their best interest.

If you have an unlimited budget, do the same things, only now you can spend money on doing them.

You can start by understanding that _everything_ you do, is a branding effort. Everything from how the phone is answered, to your blog, to how sales people act, is all branding. It must be an "all hands on deck" effort, to make it really work. It must also be a fully honest effort. Any lack of complete honesty, will kill the whole thing.
Become known in Social Media, and build the brand there, as well.
