Hello David,

ITIL is a set of standards that does not talk about Technology or Cost upfront rather it is all about Effectiveness of IT services for optimum results. To be more precise talks more on ROI from both Delivery and Cost in short as well as long run.

As always every technology and methodology has versions however the crux of the matter is the principles which was once joted down gets improved with every new version. ITIL has a newer flare with version 3 which is yet simplified still covers greater aspects of Infromation Technology Service Management(ITSM).

You shall need a team, may be Internal Staffs or Vendor for implementing ITIL however the fine line of understanding is how well and minutely does the staff or vendor team understand the concept of ITIL.

The concept of ITIL is as good as other industry best practices however a clear understanding can be obtained if we understand the business objective and expectation.

Thanks

Hi David,

Most folks do not deploy principles. Instead, they deploy some technology to address a business need or improve an existing process by engaging outside consultants with a specific goal in mind. I suggest that you first identify the area of the business you wish to improve, research the technology you wish to use to improve it, work with vendors/consultants to estimates of the time and cost for your endeavor with the focus on addressing some business need.

Hope this helps!

ITIL practices are necessary for an efficient IT service organization. The cost of not utilizing ITIL processes and procedures will be high, but calculating them is difficult.

You need a high ranking champion (Manager or Director) in your organization with a passion for ITIL and an ability to inspire followers. ITIL v3 knowledge or certification is great, but v2 knowledge is enough to get started.

The cost of implementation can be minimized by implementing procedures that can utilize existing systems and not require new purchases.

For instance, utilize the calendar function in Outlook or Google for scheduling as most organizations are using these apps already. An app like Remedy will be helpful but is not necessary for ITIL implementation. This may seem crude, but ITIL is about process and not about systems.

I have done it using existing apps such as Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint. You can too.
