How can I get online credit card processing on my website?

I run a small specialty clothing boutique and would like to start selling my wares online. I’m working with our web designer to integrate a shopping cart into my site, and he suggested I start looking for credit card processing vendors. What companies provide cost effective services, yet still meet all of the compliance requirements?

Ralph,

I personally have had a fair amount of experience with this recently while starting up my own ecommerce business. As stated above there are many options to look into. For me it was a matter of buyer security for both my site and the consumer feeling comfortable with inputting their credit card info. The last thing you want is the buyer to get all the way to making the purchase and then backing out due to a lack of trust and reliability in your site.

One thing to start with is a ssl certificate to help ensure the safety of all transactions on your site. This certificate or code, encrypts any transactions that go through your site. www.verisign.com is one that is most trusted and recognized in my opinion.

However, there are many payment gateways or shopping carts that have this built in. I would recommend looking into Authorize.net. Again just my opinion, but I can tell you that being an analyst with Focus, I do a lot of research and background work before I make a purchase. Very reliable and competitive in pricing for all you get.

I also found this site to be helpful when trying to make a decision and learning what to look for and where to start.

Check the following:
1. Paypal, google, yahooDirect as good options for payment.
2. check with your local banks
3. Visit the following link for top 10 reviews - http://credit-card-processing-review.toptenreviews.com/ it will give you a breakdown of all features and fees. Ensure that you build in all processing fees into your pricing; this way it becomes transperent to your customers.
4. There is lots of info on the net just search for "online payment getways" and or "online credit card processing"
best of luck

The Answer above is quite comprehensive but there are a couple of other options. If you use QuickBooks for your business accounting, it has processing. For American Express, you can contact them directly for information.

Ralph: Frequently, your web hosting service has those services available, and they can be integrated into your site, which is already housed on their servers. If you use a commercial hosting service, sign into your account and check out what services they offer.

If you are located in Europe, use Ogone, a very good Payment Provider.

Sagepay in the UK is good as is Securetrading. Authorize is good also in the states.

Online payment gateways are a good way of allowing you to check payments before shipping as they display some essential information.

Another thing to look at is online fraud prevention and a company called 3rd man work well with many payment systems. They link in customer data to other sites the customer may have used to give you a safer trading experience.

Over more than 35 years I've worked with all the major players in the "merchant services" world, and have narrowed them down to just two. To my knowledge these two are the only ones that are priced fairly (ALL of them can start you out with a good cost); provide 24-hour service; provide liberal underwriting (it's not easy to get most of them to accept an on-line business); and provide rate guarantees. My advice is to avoid any service provided by any major bank - I can state unequivocally that they are the most notorious for raising rates and imposing bogus fees.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that you will be negotiating with an agent to set your monthly and percentage per transaction fees. The more quotes you have the more leverage you will have when dealing with the different agents. I found http://www.businesscreditcardprocessingonline.com/online-card-processing.html to be a really helpful resource to get a handful of free quotes.
