Keep navigation simple. Don't have hundreds of links all over the page.
Keep some white space, don't fill every single inch of the page.
Make sure any graphics you have are very low resolution so they load quickly.
Make it easy to see what it is you do.
Don't use too many fonts, maximum 3.
Watch your colors. Red on blue or green is a big no no.
Have a call to action on each page.
Make search, contact us and subscribe options easy to find.
Change the info on the landing page at minimum weekly.
Remove old news and documentation from the landing page. 3 year old news is not news.
Check links monthly to make sure they're not broken.
Don't use too many moving elements, it gets very irritating very quickly.
Here's a prime example of what NOT to do! ;-) I'm sure you site is a dream in comparison.

I don't really have an example of the perfect site, because I haven't found it yet.
There's an old adage I learned from a former VP Marketing for Gannet: less is more.
With my company, Chalkboarder (www.chalkboarder.com), that is the approach we've taken. There is deeper content to explore inside the site; we wanted to take a minimalist approach - viewing our landing page as the web equivalent of an elevator pitch.
Oh, here's a link that might help on page layout.
