We're merging out telephony and computer systems. I trust our IT staff, but I'm worried about potential problems. How can I make sure we avoid major problems?

Check quality of your local network, your WAN, use real SIP phones if you have weak PCs. Your access to the PSTN via media gateway is often a problem area. So are Faxs and T.38 faxing.
Steve,
Your IT team have hopefully got the technology integration covered but a lot of problems occur because of a lack communication with the business. All I would say at this point is to involve users early on to agree on the functionality of the new system and to test all the way through the development/project cycle. Most of the failures I have come across have been due to misaligned business requirements and system delivery and the costs to either make do or improve are usually considerable.
