How can I make a VoIP call from my Smartphone?

I have a Blackberry and I’d like to figure out a way to make VoIP calls from the device. Any thoughts or ideas?

The question is very generalized but assuming that there is a BES (Blackberry Enterprise Server) on site and running Mobile Voice Services, calls can be made through a local PBX. There are several other options available but a better knowledge of the circumstances would be required. Some BB devices also support WiFi and possibly your solution might require network handoff. I have integrated several solutions with customers that have requested such information.

I will give the disclaimer that I am from a vendor that delivers this today (and has been shipping since Sep 2009 as the enterprise VoIP over WiFi solution for BlackBerry).

The Agito Networks RoamAnywhere solution integrates with the leading enterprise IP-PBX's and registers as a SIP line/device. Calls on the BlackBerry are made using VoIP over WiFi when in the enterprise or secured with an SSL-VPN when at home/hotspot/public WiFi. It doesn't require users to manually start an application to route calls over the cheapest available network as it integrates into the native dialer.

The solution consists of the RoamAnywhere Mobility Router appliance that integrates with the PBX and UC systems as well as a thin client application that is downloaded over-the-air.

If you utilize Tmobile as your carrier most of their phones allow you to connect to a wireless network and place calls that way (thus free and not using your minutes).
You can also utilize a 3rd party application such as skype mobile (currently set for Verizon) that also allows this type of functionality.

The Blackberry operating system is not easy to work with for most application software providers. There are a number of choices a user can make, however when doing so they mayneed to consider the following:
a) Is the application they download accredited? There are very few that are! Downloading a none accredited app could jeapodise the warranty on your phone and make your phone content insecure.
b) Which offer the best commercial deal? Who has the best rates, who offers a service that has no hidden charges? Check whether you get charged a subscription package, call set up charges, a minimum call charge cost, or restrictions on which counties you can call (landline or mobile) also what the contract term may be.
c) How is the call actually made and what are the real costs? Such as how it affects the data you will consume when calling via Wi-Fi

I understand that people may suggest using Skype but there are drawbacks with this. Skype is great if the person that you call is also connected to Skype. This often takes some management time to arrange and often or not one of the parties will not be available.

I work for Vyke, we are an accredited application provider with RIM. Our application integrates with the operating system of a BlackBerry so you can phone your contacts in the normal way. It doesn't use Wi-Fi to connect however with our application:
a) It is totally free to acquire
b) There ae no hidden charges such as subscription costs, call set up costs, minimum call costs, there is no contract term AND it is UK VAT free.
c) all the user pays is for the minutes that they expend

Let's look at Vyke's rates, compare them with Skype:
Australia = 2p per minute
China = 2p per minute
India = 5p per minute
And this is the rates for calling both landline and mobile

Finally what is the user exeprience? Skype - I'll leave you to be the judge of that. With Vyke we only user primary gold routes so quality is going to be the best, we also provide CLI so you know who is calling who.

We also provide at no extra cost SMS Texts at 5p per text from and to anywhere in the world, the mobile operators will charge you 25p

I know I am biased but I hope this has given you something to consider take a look at www.vyke.com

There is a service called PUREMinutes that you can download onto your blackberry and it will act as your International carrier - with rates equal to (or better than) phone card rates. http://www.pureminutes.com/

Anthony,
My answer is slightly self serving, because I am going to suggest my company's mobile app solution. I will provide you with a link herewith:
https://www.vyke.com/lp/mobile-accc.jsf

Vyke provide a mobile VoIP service for the BlackBerry handset. The application is targeted at the segment of mobile phone users who call international numbers, therefore it is an international caller service.
Vyke customers in the UK can call international numbers at 95% less than a typical mobile operator tariff.

With Vyke the application is free to down load, there is no monthly subscription nor fixed term contract. Unlike mobile operator international caller plans there are no hidden cost such as call set up charges, minimum call charges. With Vyke there is no restriction with regards to time of day or where you can call. For UK customers our rates are also VAT free!

The Vyke service does not require a change of number or a new SIM. It is a pre-paid service you can add credit to your account at any time so you do not have a monthly expenditure commitment and any credit you put on your account stays there and carries over each month until you use it.

SO - if you want to reduce the cost of international calling use the above link.

If you just want to reduce the cost of local and national calls whilst in the UK I am sure you will have a response to your question from other service providers.

Good luck with your quest.

Best Regards

Stuart

Just trying to clarify your question...why? Will you be in an environment where you have no mobile signal? Trying to make calls from an existing IP system thru your BB?

The cheapest and easiest way is to keep your phone and download iM. iMobile is a business mobile phone application that when installed, reduces non geo and international calls by up to 90% and cuts down international roaming charges. No tricks, no prefix's this is seem-less and automatic, this app has been live for nearly a year and is based on VoIP. We have live users in the UK, France, Spain, Germany using Nokia and blackberry handsets.

Stuart is correct, Blackberry handsets can be challenging to install some applications however we've tried and tested many and they all work 100%. Current users include global service providers right down to local users in the UK.

Sorry to all those who keep going on about Skype - iM blows this out of the water and we can guarantee the quality of every call. - Ouch!

Anthony - I'd be delighted to share more information about iM.

Kind Regards,
