Looking for ways to lower costs in our contact center. An outside consultant recommended implementing a SIP trunk. How can SIP trunking lower my costs?

Ben,

I don't think that SIP trunks will reduce your costs. They provide greater flexibility and more features, but the cost model of rental v call charges will be similar to the current TDM type lines out there at the moment.

Depending on the area you are in, and the likely candidates, there can be cost savings with SIP trunks. Even the Local Exchange Carriers in some areas will offer you a lower cost for SIP trunks than their traditional PSTN trunks.

However, lower cost does not always mean equal service, although in most cases it can.

Ensure you are getting trunks that are facilities based - where QOS is available all the way from the providers SIP switch all the way to your doorstep, with no best effort connections in the middle.

Ensure compatibility with your existing equipment, or understand fully the cost of any ancillary equipment such as gateways and Session Border Controllers that will need to be installed between your provider and your current equipment.

If there are considerable savings on your monthly recurring costs, but the cost of hardware is too great, consider looking at an equipment lease - stretching the payments on the hardware over the term it will be used to see if the lease cost is less than the monthly savings - its a way to conserve precious capital, while still enjoying the immediate monthly cost savings.
