Social Media are just another tool and channel to present yourself to the outside world - but apparently we have to reinvent the wheel now. Influence, CRM, Marketing - everything seems to change now it's Social

It doesn't

If you make an ass of yourself in the newspaper, how much will that hurt your reputation?
If you make an ass of yourself on the radio, how much will that hurt your reputation?
If you make an ass of yourself on national television, how much will that hurt your reputation?

You tell me. Nothing changes really, except for the volume and speed at which events occur - it's a television or radio where people can talk back

Hi Lauren

I believe that social media definitely can make or break your company. My business needs social media to promote my website as it is focused on family in my city and I also market services and products, so we benefit greatly.

A few lessons I learned from using Facebook:

Be acurate with information that you post online. People might think you are a liar is your info is different.
Don't be personal on your business page but communicate with fans.
Inbox someone if the issue is more private.
Check your page daily to romove any negative info added by fans.
If there is a bad comment about your business, contact the person personally to sort it out but remove the comment as soon as you see it.
These tips have helped me to keep my business and personal profiles clean.
Regards
Helen

Aren't we putting the cart before the horse?

Isn't Social Media a tool?

When did the paradigm change from companies using tools to help run their businesses to tools running businesses?

This is akin to me saying Excel or an accounting system runs your company. It doesn't. It is a tool by which we elicit information from data.

Social Media is used to meet an end, which is a marketing plan has laid out, requiring certain objectives, using certain modalities and/or tools to a specific demographic.

Maybe this would make a good question...

Ignoring social media will be like ignoring the Internet - not a viable strategy for the long run. And social media without a strategy will be a lot like a lot of stuff thrown up on the Web in desperation. Social media is maturing and the science of social media is maturing. We not only need social media, we need to know what to do, how, where and when.

Since this week the Egyptian army has used Facebook to communicate its plans, there is no doubt that social media has an important role to play. Your question is too broad because it depends on what your business is, who your market is and the current situation, as to how much of an impact social media can have (and that is just the beginning)

Ignore it at your peril
Rely on it alone would be ridiculous (in most cases)
Like any tool, it is as good as the way you use it
