How can you make a new sales hire productive quickly?

What can companies do to shorten the time it takes for new sales hires to be productive and hit quotas? Do you have or have you seen effective techniques? Thanks, Markus

The best training I have seen is through mentoring. Immediately set up your new hire with a mentor. Have the mentor explain his/her techniques, then have the new hire watch their mentor on calls. The mentor can debrief with the new hire afterward. Finally, have the mentor watch as the new hire makes his/her first calls, then go over the call afterward.

Establishing this relationship as soon as the hire comes on--and making sure the relationship is a positive one--should really help.
