How can you tell which spyware detector downloads are safe?
I've heard horror stories about spyware detectors that are actually spyware. What are the warning signs that a spyware detecting application isn't what is claims to be?

You can't tell. These programs look like genuine.
The signs are that they detect spyware, warn you big time, and then want you to pay for removal immediately.
All the following are safe:
SpyBot S&D
AdAware
Hitman Pro
Super Antispyware
If you're concerned you could go to download.com and look for one there. You will be able to look at how many downloads programs have, along with reviews.
Here is the direct link to the spyware section: http://download.cnet.com/windows/spyware-removers/?tag=rb_content;contentNav Make sure you scroll down to get past the sponsored links. They will say "Sponsored Match". If you scroll past the first six or so you will get to the real ones.
