I know that this really doesn't answer the CRM specific piece of the question but I previously worked for a company were we would actually ask our prefered customers to be part of a "committee" that we would then use to bounce marketing ideas, potential product lines, customer service suggestions, etc. off of for recommendations. This provided us with great insight into our customers way of thinking without incurring the cost of running an ineffective marketing campaign.
As an added benefit, the individuals we asked to take part in the committee actually considered it an honor to be chosen and ultimately strengthened our relationship with that client.
