My performance appraisals go well. Why? Because:

* I set the tone by the place chosen.
* The employee and I negotiate the time (their time is important too).
* Paperwork, etc., is prepared in advance.
* Questions/concerns are anticipated.
* My approach is kind, gentle and honest.
* No matter how bad things may be, I always find a few bright spots too.
* I begin by asking the employee how s/he thinks his/her performance has been.
* There is always good eye contact.
* I listen...listen...listen.
* The employee and I talk strategy for the coming year. In the case of a very negative
review, we talk about consequences as well, always with respect and caring. I always ask
how I can help them do better.
* I always thank them for their time

It works pretty consistently because it comes from the heart as well as the intellect. People need to feel cared about.
