How do I determine the amount of bandwidth needed for a start up site with customers waiting?
I already have a customer base from a previous website, but that site is going under. I don't know how many people are going to switch over, but I want to be prepared. How much is too much? A ballpark figure for the amount of traders will be somewhere around 300-500 active traders...trading on a daily basis. We also have the opportunity for growth.

The good news is that I don't think you'll need that much. I assume you are talking about stock, bond, etc. trading. This is typically a data intensive activity, which doesn't generate a lot of traffic. Large bw needs are usually driven by multimedia. With 300-500 active users, you can probably figure on max 10% to 20% of that generating simulataneous traffic (i.e. requests at exactly the same time). This will be your peak traffic.
You can look at traffic in a few ways: get web log reports from the other site; put a traffic monitor on the other site (if it is still up); ask the current ISP for a bandwidth usage report (particuarly if it is hosted somewhere, they monitor traffic for every site).
The other thing is depending on where you put it, you can give yourself some flex room on bw. Most hosting companies supply burstable bw. That is, you pay for a fixed amounts, say 1 Mbps, but can peak up to a ceiling, say 100Mbps for usually around 5% of the month.
Would you be interested in a product that was developed to bridge the gap of limited bandwidth options available for expanding local networks? This patented technology bonds together as many as six high-speed Internet connections forming a virtual single broadband pipe that is extremely reliable and efficient. In addition, you can use a combination of access technologies including DSL, cable modem, T-1 circuits or fiber that can be blended resulting in download speeds of up to 300Mbps. If you are interested in hearing more about this technology please email me at Mare@mushroomnetworks.com
Host the server in a data center with multiple connections to the internet and choose a burstable option...you can burst up to thousands of megs and your future growth is all taken in account..pay as you go is the best solution..
contact me directly if could be of any assistance to you in our world class data center in Orlando www.atlantic.net.
