How do I find the right outsourcing company for my accounting needs?

I have a small contracting business. What are some things that I should look at? Experience? Cost? What else?

Software. Have a look at Freshbooks. They offer free accounting if you want to do it yourself, (up to 3 clients, then it's paid).

Find someone who specialises in small business tax returns. Ask for references! Make sure they are registered accountants, lots of fly-by-nighters out there that will take your money and run.

I'm not sure my answer will help Rick since he asked the question over a year ago but for those coming late to the party it may help.

If you do not have a full-time bookkeeper or accountant and are looking to outsource those tasks then you need to consider the following:

(1) Does the individual have experience with your industry - in this case construction. Certain industries have unique record keeping processes and it's best to find someone who will not be learning on the job but already has experience.

(2) Look for someone who knows the software you are using. I know QuickBooks is very popular with contractors and if you use QuickBooks look for a Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor.

(3) Determine ahead of time if you want them to work onsite or remotely. Many bookkeepers and accountants prefer to work remotely but in my experience it's best to have them work onsite.

(4) Determine exactly what tasks you want them to complete. For example will they be doing the day-to-day bookkeeping only or are they also going to be preparing monthly financial statements. A lot of bookkeepers do not have the expertise and education to be able to produce accurate financials.

(5) Only consider cost after you have narrowed your choice based upon the other requirements.

I hope this helps.
