How do HP Compaq business notebooks compare with other leading laptops?

Several different individuals have recommended HP Compaq business notebooks to me for my SMB. Are there any other laptops I should consider before investing in these new computers?

I would not recommend an HP/Compaq laptop to any business that absolutely needed a dependable product and had limited finances such as SMBs.

HP is trying to hard to be first to market with features without correcting major flaws in their motherboards. I have a stack of LTs from the last 10 years of business and unfortunately most of them HP that either had power coupling or display problems due faulty motherboards. This is not just something I have experienced at the SMB level but recently at a major enterprise who moved from Dell to HP only to have a majority of the LT needing new MBoards within the first year. They seem to be more flash and less reliable. Ignoring my own advice I purchased a new tablet from them prior to a MSFT partner summit and loaded it up as an example of virtual UC office. We spent about 2k on the LT and maxed it out to ensure performance would not be an issue at the client presentation level. 15th months WHAM! It along with 2 others have become desktops tied to a monitor.

I asked several collagues and associates what they used for thier business and the answers were about what you would expect...60% Dell, 20% IBM 10% HP and 10% Toshiba.

Then I asked then what would they recommend based on their experience for trouble free computing both at home and at work. The majority said Dell is the most resilient but tied for second was Toshiba and Apple.

So, as I respond to you on one of our 2 Toshiba's Remote Desktoped into our Golden Goose Egg HP Tablet (now anchored to a monitor), if your business counts on it I would recommend either Toshiba or Dell (Toshiba above Dell if you needs Multimedia capabilities). The up an coming player is actually Fujitsu which I have heard good things about buy not much Hype.

Steer clear of HP until they fix their quality issue or it will bite you. (Note: Toshiba's Warranty repair is also incredibly easy...just drop it off at any MailBoxes Etc. UPS takes it from there ...not that we have ever had to use it.)

I've had an HP Presario laptop for four years now and the only thing I have had to do to it in terms of repair is replace the battery. Good Data...Definitely something I will tag for future reference.

I agree that 4-5 years ago HP had a good product with the exception of one component...the power coupling. That one small piece troubled them for nearly 2 years simply because either of location or sourcing. The pin inside the coupling breaks free on frequent users and it is difficult to replace without replacing the entire mother board.

If you asked me as a consumer, I would say it is hard to beat the glitz of technology that HP is putting into their product. However, as an SMB, I would expect that you want something that will last beyond the 18-24 month window, which based on this data clearly puts HP as a higher risk.
