How do I leave my job?

I received a great offer from another company, and am going to take the job. How do I leave my current job tactfully, and without burning any bridges?

You honestly present your conflicting goals to the company and its leadership:
I want to progress in my career and take this new opportunity AND I want to maintain my relationship with this company.

Then ask them: How can I leave the company without ruining the relationships I have developed here?

What you are doing is asking them for advice on how to leave them. You would be surprised at how this shift will change their reaction to you.

Sandwhich your talk.

Say something nice.
Say what it is you want to say (I'm leaving, I want to keep in touch, love what you do, etc)
Say something nice.

So far good advice. I would be honest and respectful. You have kind-of answered your own question - You have a great offer that you want to accept, but you'd like to keep on good terms with you current company, and that's what you can say.

How they respond with depend on a number of factors and you won't know until you tell them. Factors that might influence their response will include:

- whether you are in a revenue generating position
- whether it's relatively easy to replace you (ie not specialist skills)
- whether you are going to competition
- the culture of the organisation

Congrats on your new job and I hope the conversation goes well.
Best
Liz
