How to do payroll in-house?

Ever since I started my company I had always outsourced my payroll to a nationwide vendor. Recently they’ve been making a lot of errors, and their customer service has been less than helpful. I’m considering bringing my payroll in-house, but the thing is, I have no idea where to start. What recommendations do you have for someone in my position? Can anyone offer a quick “10 step guide” to bringing payroll in-house?

Maybe you should try a different payroll company. A good company shouldn't make errors and if you are experiencing them I'd say it's time to change. I work for Paycom ( http://www.paycomonline.com ), you should check us out. We'd love to help you get things back on track.

Jeanette: I don't offer payroll services like Justin does, so I won't suggest you use my services. But, I do think he has a point. You might look at other outsourced solutions before you decide to bring your payroll in house. Ask around your industry and business community to see who is happy with their vendor and then check them out. Interview potential vendors just like you do your potential employees. Ultimately, if you do decide that you really do want to bring the function in house, do the same thing. Make your potential solution vendor sell you on their product and take the time to check them out. Part of their service should be helping you to make the switchover (depending upon the size of your organization).

Payroll services can help but in my experence if you have a small staff 100 or less there are many programs you can use that are very easy to set up and use with very little effort.
