How do we prioritize our website on search engines like Yahoo and Google?

We run a small business in the Bay Area and we are trying to get our company website on the first couple pages of Yahoo and Google. How do we prioritize our website on search engines to obtain that ranking?

Start with your keyword research. Make sure you are ranking for the words you need to. I have posted some keyword research videos at http://www.searchclassroom.com which I think you will find helpful. If you don't get your keyword research right at the beginning you will fail.

Also with respect to prioritization, don't worry about the differences between different search engines - Google is the biggest and Bing is the next because Bing (formerly MSN Live) announced it will also be providing Yahoo's search results.

With respect to prioritization you should do this...
a) Ensure your site is properly structured to be indexed by search engines
b) Do the basics for on-site seo
c) Work on getting visibility for your site through publishing articles, videos, responding on blogs, and forums like this.
d) Get listed in relevant directories related to your niche.
e) Register on Google Local Search - and ask people to post reviews of your business there.

After seeing the keyword research videos you will probably see that how soon you can rank very much depends on how many websites you are competing with for your main search terms. Don't try and rank for "widgets" if there are 100 million competing web pages - rather try and rank for Bay Area Widgets" - Big tip - if your business is local work on promoting your geographic area in all your search marketing.

Take care!

Getting your website to the first page can be a daunting task and can take considerable time depending on the quality of the other sites ranked for your specific keywords.

Search engines look for many different variables when determining the ranking of your site. Some of these include: Site content; relevant keywords in the title tags for each page; page structure, so that the main content comes before your sidebars. This makes it easier for the search engines to tell what the page is about; the amount of quality back links you have from other sites.

Each search engine rates these variables differently so you might show up on high on one and not another.

Instead of focusing completely on getting your search engine to the first page, which could take years, try to figure out other avenues to pursue to promote your business. Richard already focused on some of these but, try finding forums that are relevant to your specific business and become part of the forum community and in your signature have a reference to your website. Submit your site to quality directories that are relevant to your business. Join your local chamber of commerce and add your site to their directory. Write articles and submit them to other sites. Find other sites that might be willing to review your website.

Basically, you want to plant little 'seeds' all over the internet about your site. That way the search engines will see that your site must be important because they keep finding links to it all over the place. But be careful, make sure that you are not spamming your links just anywhere. Most search engines look at the quality of the sites that your link is on and if they think the site is bad it can affect the ranking of your site.

And the quickest way to get your site on the front page of the search engine is through paid advertising. Although organic search is what you should aim for -- conducting a paid search campaign can quickly bring potential clients to your website.

In regards to your businesses website do everything Richard suggests. Additionally though you want to leave as many digital footprints as possible. Get involved in all types of social media. Link back to your website on these channels. Create content online centered around your business. Content rises to the top of search engines based on how long it has been available and how valuable it has been to the online community. Generate lots of valuable content and make sure it links back to your website. You'd be surprised at how much traffic your site can generate from links on social media channels.
