How do I work with an employee with depression?

How can I handle employees with depression sensitively and what sort of accommodations should I provide for them? Their condition isn't greatly affecting their work, but I want to be sure that we provide the necessary support.

In my experience the best approach has been to have an open conversation with the employee with regards to how we (the employer) can help. Typically accomodation is not required, except maybe flexibilty to allow the employee to see thier doctor if appointments cannot be scheduled after hours. Hopefully your organization has an employee assistance plan, for which you can the employee a copy of the brochure in your discussion and encourage them to use the confidential service. If it does start affecting thier work, other steps may need to be taken.
