How do you determine which social media business community is right for you?

With the rise of social media business communities, how do you determine which one is best for you? Is it the quality of contributions in the Q&A section? The high level business professionals who participate in the community? Or the design and layout? What drives you to participate in a certain community?

The only question you need to ask yourself is: where are my customers/clients interacting online? Wherever they are is where you need to be. If they're all over Facebook, go there! If they seem to congregate in certain groups on LinkedIn, make sure you're there, too!

This will, of course, take research and planning, especially if you're a new business with no current client base on which to base your social analysis. It's going to require some down and dirty researching of different networks; fortunately, most of them are FREE, so have at it! More and more, this type of marketing is paying off for companies.
