How do you engage people who just want it to work so they can do their job and go home?

Many of my coworkers don't know and think that there is no way they can understand anything about the magic box on their desk. Getting them to participate and learn is very difficult because they think that they can't understand which leads to them not even wanting to try. Is this part of the HPG? The belief that they can't understand it, so they shouldn't even try?

For security awareness, I'm a fan of applying the SUCCESs qualities that Chip and Dan Health write about in their book "Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die":

Simplicity: How do you strip an idea to its core without turning it into a silly soundbite?
Unexpectedness: How do you capture people's attention...and hold it?
Concreteness: How do you help people understand your idea and remember it much later?
Credibility: How do you get people to believe your idea?
Emotional: How do you get people to care about your idea?
Stories: How do you get people to act on your idea?

The really cool thing about this is that when you have people like this and if you will take time to taylor your training to fit into their mindset then they will realize that they can do it and it will boost their confidence. Once they realize that it's not rocket science they will look for opportunities to be aware and quiet possible it will spill over into other job areas.

Bert - in any group there is a common distribution of ability. I think there is tremendous potential in everyone and the difference between the leaders and the followers can be overcome. http://www.babblewareinc.com/index.php/2011/08/limitless-knowledge-and-innova...

That being said...it isn't easy to motivate everyone. Some will be actively against any effort. These people need to be released to find more fulfilling work as their effect on the "team" is corrosive.
