Nancy, as a marketer, I try to set up a social profile on each major network to become familiar with the feature and functions. Since most of my clients are B2B, I pay particular attention to the social networks that I believe will best target my client's audiences. As I believe your focusing mainly on individual use of the social networks, here's a quick overview of how I participate online:
Facebook: While I believe consumer brands have derived the most value, I tend to use this for personal networking. For my clients, I may manage a Facebook page when warranted.
LinkedIn: This is my main professional network in terms of connecting with people in the industry and participating in industry-based discussions.
Twitter: I leverage Twitter mainly as a professional tool versus personal, which I keep to Facebook.
Google +: I set up a profile to check it out. I'm still torn on the value and believe this will become more of a professional tool for me.
Overall, I find Facebook more personal as I limit it to family and friends only, while the other outlets are more public facing for professional use.
As to how I manage this? I use a mix of Tweetdeck (Facebook updates and Twitter) and emails (LinkedIn Group notifications) to keep track. I think a good rule of thumb is that you don't have to respond to everything. Set time aside either in the morning or afternoon to scan the items and determine what is worthy for response.
