I actually attended a session at CLS West (http://clswest.wikia.com/) on this very topic! Ultimately, the KPIs and metrics you choose to use are going to vary based on your company, which platforms you're using and what the ultimate goal is. However, here's a few of the common metrics that community managers are using today:
• Pageviews
• Unique visitors
• Time spent on site
• Number of comments/ answers
• Activity on forums & social media (FB, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.)
• Response rate (how quickly CMs are responding to mentions/feedback)
Hope that helps a little bit! Interested in seeing other responses to this question.
