Pick someone with more clout than you :) Seriously. Pick someone whose audience could become your audience based on the goal you set to achieve with your book and the subject matter it covers. It's as much a marketing/sales decision as a "book" decision.

Disclosure: I asked Craig Rosenberg (who asked this question) to write the Foreword to my book. Thankfully, Craig said "yes."

So my real-world example: my book is about lead generation using virtual events. I had more confidence in my expertise on virtual events than on lead generation. While an effective book had to cover lead generation well, I looked for a Foreword author with prominent expertise in lead generation (aka more expertise than me).

I knew that my book took a unique angle (i.e. no one had before written specifically about lead generation AND virtual events together), but having Craig write the Foreword was a somewhat explicit endorsement around the entire premise of the book.

In summary, I'd say:

1) Find someone with a similar, yet complementary expertise.
2) Find a well-known authority in your target segment.
3) Find someone who agrees with the premise of your book.

1. Before one decides a person to write foreword for your book its very important to plan who is the target audience for whom you have written this book and how do you plan to market it.
2. "Getting a foreword written for a book is similar to selecting a celebrity for endorsing your brand", because both of them are inseparable then
3. Be very careful, that the person writing the foreword doesn't overshadow the personality of your book by his aura and people start thinking that it his book and you are just writing it
4. He shouldn't also be so irrelevant to the subject which people are unable to relate to
5. Avoid the person whose words will not be believed by the people, e.g. a politician, a bureaucrat

That's all, otherwise it doesn't take much time to decide on the guest, because, he is just for couple of pages and you are there for the rest..

All the Best!
