If the company blocks all social networking tools, then SharePoint My Sites can stack up well because there is no alternative for employees. But if social media is embraced in an organisation, it might not do so well. You'd probably need a 3rd party tool like Newsgator to extend the functionality in order to compete with the big ones, (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn).

The tools aren't the problem however; understanding why you have them, having a strategy in place to leverage them properly, and changing the mindset of people to use these tools are much bigger challenges.

Have to agree with Veronique! SharePoint 2010 has some gaps compared to features/functions of the public social networks. Solutions like NewsGator increase adoption and offer a rich set of social capabilities with a TCO less than other 3rd party tools that claim they integrate with SharePoint. NewsGator makes sense if an organizations wants to collaborate in the context of communities, begin to engage and aggregate information via activity streams, enhance social networking via rich user profiles, recognize and surface expertise, and personalize the user experience through "collaboration dashboard", etc..
