How hard is it building green IT infrastructers?
There have been some rumblings down the line of trying to make our IT infrastructure more green. I would like to know what the first steps are in building green IT infrastructures. Are there any websites or white papers that lay out the overall process? What parts of your infrastructure can be greener, and what parts can’t?

Virtualizing your IT infrastructures play a huge part in green IT. Atum specializes in virtualization and green IT, I suggest taking a look on their website for more information:

What is green IT?
If you're talking about energy efficiency then consolidating servers is an obvious one, but you must consider processing capability. If you're talking networks, this is much harder.
Without knowing exactly what you do with your existing systems, it is almost impossible to suggest ways of reducing energy consumption.
Just note that the savings may not be as big as you might think, and may cost you in other ways (productivity being the main one).
The traditional IT mentality is that of a green car. If it's green, the performance suffers. However, in today's day and age, virtualization is actually able to increase your performance as well as significantly reduce the environmental foot print. I suggest giving it a shot!
