How hard is it to get a BI system to tie into existing software?
I'm a Microsoft shop but I'm not going to purchase their BI solution. How hard is it go get something like SAS or Oracle to integrate into existing software? Does it require a lot of engineering support?

Whichever BI platform you chose Data Integration becomes major challenge. Because BI works on Data warehouse where data from desperate systems needs to be unified. Its a challenge because of critical aspects like identification of Source of Origination, Data quality and standardization, historical requirements etc. Once data is unified and organized in Data Warehouse, tools like Cognos, Business Objects, SAS etc could be easily plugged in.
So unless you are looking at doing analysis in silos, it requires good amount of engineering effort to perform Data Integration even before it feeds to BI front end tools.
If you are looking at data visualization software (not just traditional BI) then you may want to look at Tableau Software to integrate/embed. I manage OEM for Tableau and we have many software companies embedding Tableau to offer strong visual analysis capabilites. Best of all it's easy to integrate and end users use the solution typically without any IT involvement.
