How has the economy affected the way you buy?

Here on the Focus Research Team, we have asked hundreds of buyers across many verticals how the economy has affected the way they rationalize business purchases . While answers vary somewhat depending on the type of technology, the majority of buyers (across verticals) claim it has 'emphasized business efficiency' in the sense that they have been forced to scrutinize and become more accountable for all business processes. How has the economy affected the way you think about buying, justify buying, evaluate products, and ultimately make a purchase?

My company is a major distributor of Remanufactured Wireless Phones in the USA. We currently process about 40,000 handsets a month, that's up from 25,000 at the beginning of the year. As much as I believe that the increase is due to our superior Quality, I know that the economy and the need for products that are less expensive than NEW products has played a huge role in that increase. We are seeing buyers trying to compete with the big guys (VZW/ATT/etc) so they must offer a Remanufactured Device with equal "bells and whistles", yet more affordable. We are doing well in this economy, but we are also passing these thrifty ways on down through our purchasing department.
