I guess my response would be, if you have videos on YouTube, why wouldn't you also embed them on your website? Beyond the fact that search engines like them, you want your website to be the destination for your buyers, not YouTube. I'm not sure what kind of sale you have, but generally it takes more than a video to build a relationship and make the sale. Some people like video, some like text, some prefer audio. Combining different formats around a topical focus can aid in gaining more of your buyers' attention.
Final answer - In my opinion, it's very important to get those videos on your website.
Hosting on youtube and embedding the videos in your site has the advantage of not having to host the videos and stream them which can be costly in terms of servers and bandwidth. Even if you were to use a content delivery network or amazon s3, etc.
Youtube is the second largest search engine so be found there and lead customers to your site. Infact video marketing should be an integral part of any digital marketing strategy.
Not only youtube but also other video sites you can use tools like traffic geyser, or free ones like tubemogul to send videos directly to all these sites.
Morgan, thanks for starting this conversation.
We started getting into video the latter part of 2011, so this topic has piqued my interest. The answers are intriguing.
As Osmas stated, YouTube is the second largest search engine, so it's not bad to get found there. Since it's a Google product, it shows up in Google search results and is "in the family". I don't use Vimeo or any other video site for this reason (plus, I don't have the time). YouTube has pretty decent analytics and its videos show up on mobile devices (I went to a blog post today that had a video link that I couldn't view on my iPhone).
My logic has been to embed YouTube video in our website page and point to our site from YouTube using the onscreen call to action feature ("For more information..."). When we can, we add a PDF transcript to the YouTube video to help its findability. In order to keep people on our webpage, there's language stating that if they want to view in full-screen mode, to press the icon on the player. We have a Wordpress site, so we add tags and a description to the page. Tweeting and posting the webpage on Google+ helps with findability (when appropriate, sending a link to the embedded video in the website in email messages helps). For a blog post, the text of the post and transcript from the video help with findability on our site. I figure that there's an SEO benefit to all that linking.
As has been stated above, embedding the video in your web page is important. We also embed our main video in our LinkedIn profile pages. The video call to action feature points to our website.
If you're not terribly tech savvy and can't embed HTML 5 videos in your site, YouTube is great for reaching multiple platforms. We're seeing a rise of mobile viewers on YouTube.
Hosting on YouTube and embedding in the web page helps to save time.
All of this is my opinion and I'm open to greater wisdom.
I would have to strongly agree with Ardath. Offering your content in different mediums is optimal if not required these days. As a general rule of thumb reading is seen as a chore for a lot of people, so anytime you offer a video option you are making it that much more likely that people will absorb your message. I've often wondered if making audio recordings of your content is worthwhile for this reason.
post it youtube, use youtube video to post it on your website. closer connection with Google increases googlebot page load time for video, also speech in video is attributed with your website URL and your brand if executed properly. =)
