How important is it to reply to each and every comment on your blog?
(This question was asked during this week's Focus Interactive Summit: Capitalizing on Social Media)
Chris, how important is it to reply to each and every comment on your blog, especially ones that are statements, not questions?

My recommendation is to set expectations on how and when you plan to respond to comments. For example, you'll respond twice a week to all questions. This will help you manage your time (if that is a concern) and determine when a response is required.
Generally speaking, I would at least respond to questions. With regard to statements, if it helps further the discussion on your blog post, I would respond to those as well.
Hope that helps,
Cece
I think it's a must. If someone takes time to read and comment on your blog, the least you can do is acknowledge them. Not only is it the courteous thing to do, but it shows people you are actively engaged and value their views. A few seconds for you to type a few words can yield a much stronger, pervasive relationship with potential customers or partners.
Within reason during the first week or two of a post being published you should try and be proactive and respond, but overtime unless someone has provided a different perspective to thank them for their points or if the comment is negative/untrue to add your point of view.
If you are guest posting it can be unrealistic to always be ontop of every possible comment, and sometimes too many author replies can look overly controlling and may not lead to discussion between readers via the comments.
Not sure I could have said it better than Nick. +1. 100% agree...

While some businesses have not jumped into social media completely, i.e., reserved their brand-named pages on all social sites, many have spent the time to create blogs (since they are a more advanced form of the message boards from Web 1.0). Therefore, whether a CEO/other leaders, members of a marketing/PR team, or members of a sales/customer service team write the blog posts, the objective is to create a dialogue with customers and/or prospective customers. I agree with the other comments, if people take the time to read the posts, it is imperative to respond - whether to provide an answer to a question posed by the reader, to share an update to the issue in discussion, or at the very least, to thank the reader for taking the time to read and comment.
