How important is your website to the success of your business?

I'm about to open a Financial Consulting company and I'm looking into building a website. I've messed around with the idea of doing it myself, but I don't have any previous experience. As a start up, should I outsource to a professional to build my website or do you think I can get by on my own? I want a few simple feature, but the graphics and pictures look like some of the harder things involved with the process. Can this website potentially make or break my company?

Whether or not you need a website is going to depend on how you run your business, but most likely a website is a good idea and for the cost it can be a great ROI.

I would recommend hiring a professional to do the work for you. If you do your due diligence and depending on the scope of what you want, you could get a decent site built for between $1000-$5000. Building a website is kind of like buying a car though -- Do you want the economy car with a manual transmission and no power or would you like the luxury car with automatic parallel parking?

I don't see a website breaking your company, but it can help add another way for potential customers to interact with your business. Building a website and putting it on the internet does not mean that people are going to be flooding onto your site. It can take time and additional money to promote your company on the internet, just as you would have to promote in real life. Although the cost of promoting online is relatively cheap when compared to other ways of marketing.

I agree Keith - and I'd also add that your website is your shop window if you like - its where people will go to find out more about your company and ethics as a business - it can really help people decide if they want to use your services or products. Its also a very powerful way for new customers to find you.

A professional looking company website doesn't have to cost a lot of money - we produce fully feature CMS websites that you can update for £300. You can also look at using something like wordpress to get you started, wordpress is free. Its worth shopping around for the right designers to do the job and keep your search engine strategy plans in mind before you start the build. If people/potential customers can't find you then your website won't be doing its job properly.
