How long do you train your sales reps before setting them lose?

I'm curious to hear what the average sales training period is- a few days? A week? Two weeks? How long do you train your sales reps for before setting them lose?

If you are brining in a new untrained rookie take it slow, have them work with all departments to get to know the culture of the company and bridge the varied departments.Train them on product and service and the selling skills and tools they will need, then take them on the street or if inside be with them on the phones a day or two, do some role playing and then assign a mentor before handing over accounts and targets or a territory. This could be two weeks to a month ( I know you want production) but you need to make the investment. The do ride alongs or sit withs if inside on and off until you are comfortable it is working well.

If we are talking an experienced sales person then the time window is shorter but they still need to know culture, departments and your method of selling, and the tools you use.

Bringing in a sales trainer for new reps can really help and free you up a little but you still need to invest some time.
