How much end user training is "enough" for new enterprise software implementations?

3 hours? 1/2 day? 2 weeks? How much end user training is "enough" in order to ensure high user adoption rates on enterprise software implementations?

This is similar to the old adage of how long is a piece of string. For some users the training will be rather short and limited based on past experience, knowledge and maturity. For others it will be extended.

I would state the the training needs to be long enough to enable the user to get the full value from the solution and this includes them being able to demonstrate how they are deriving that value. This is most likely an ongoing training as with most software it enables some kind of process and as industries and customers change, the end-user must adapt and learn how to best use the software to keep pace with the change.

We suggest enough to get them up and running with at least the "beginning" set of tools - most people are not able to maintain a high level of attention beyond say 3 hours in one day - with a 15 minute break down the middle.

Then we schedule a "follow up" 2-3 weeks out so that they can come back to the table with real world questions. This can be live or webinar based...

And then ongoing "bite size" session as part of the regular schedule of quarterly sales meetings to keep things sharp and highlight those "cool" things which are not "core" but really make a difference.
