How much should custom blog design cost me?

I know that there are likely ranges, if you could expand on that in your response...i would appreciate it.

Craig - It depends on a number of factors. The first thing you probably want to do is separate out the development and design portions. It looks like you're using WordPress (excellent choice), so you probably want to have a WP optimization person look at it to see what other tools are available that you might want to add - before the redesign process begins. Then the redesign. Then that new design needs to get broken up into a custom theme. TNG's bottom end numbers seem about right depending on what you want. The upper end can be a lot higher, although usually individual-owned blogs (as opposed to corporate) don't break the $5,000 line.

Craig,

Just like any website - development could range for a number of factors. At the bottom end, it could be in the range of $750 - $1,500 and at the upper range (depending on the amount of graphic design and custom features needed), as much as $3,000.

It depends on what you are looking for - with a wordpress customization, I wouldn't spend more than $2000. Also, I recommend checking out this site...
1. 99designs.com - for about $300-600 you can post your project and have multiple designers compete to create your custom wordpress theme (expect more entries and higher quality with a larger $ prize)

I completely agree with Justin. There are several factors that are considered while making the costing of a project. As you said that you only need a custom design for your blog, again there might be several other requirements needed by designers like what complexity of your design would be. The more complex design, the more costing of the project.

Justin,

I'd say that it depends on why you are having the blog designed. If it's just to make it pretty, then you can certainly post a project to any of the freelance job boards and get decent results.

On the other hand, some people/companies have blogs ultimately to generate sales leads and new business. If this the case for you or your company, I'd say that you need to avoid freelance boards and hire a small firm that can think strategically about the tie-ins between content and generating leads.
