How prevalent are rogue security vendors and fake IT security products?
I generally like to stick with the 'big names' but when you're looking for security solutions on a small budget, how worried do you need to be about who you're dealing with/what products you buy? How common are fake vendors and products?

Gary,
If you are on a tight budget many of the open source products are highly comparable to the big 5 offerings. Also home grown works as well, 3 guesses who supports the do not build your own philosophy…
A good place to look starts with; what the Feds offer you for free at the NIST and MITRE sites.
An example is the OVAL interpreter – Open source and a great start to building your own.
Alien Vault is another good example of almost free in a SEIM tool.
The options are out there, one of the things I really like about applications that supply source, is that I can take a look under the hood, to ensure I am not being hoodwinked ;-)
