How to put your keyword to work?

Many people research keywords and put it to use on the content of web page, title, description. Most of them think that the search engine can find them easily. Does this really work? How do we need to put the keyword that people are regularly looking for. How do we need to optimize certain pages? How do we make our web pages climb on search engines?Any thoughts and ideas? Good question. Keyword research is important and best way to figure out is to look at your existing site analytics. Look at what traffic results in

i) higher traffic
ii) best conversions.

What you want to do is use this historical data, compare it to your competitors site and then apply good old marketing sanity check. If you dont have any good statistical data, run some PPC campaigns to drive traffic to the site using various keyword driven campaigns.

Once you've a manageable list of keywords, I suggest combining them into key phrases that you can actually reach top SE positions for. For example, "Online CRM software training" is easier to reach top ranking than for individual keywords of "CRM" or "software training."

The actual webpage optimization can be a challenge on its own, but remember to use the keyphrase in the title of the page and as part of H1 and H2 tags. Don't go overboard spamming your keywords - just write naturally. Also make sure that urls have have key phrases embedded in them (i.e. focus.com/online-crm-software-training/).

Now thats onsite changes, the most important offsite change is to increase backlinks to your pages. You can run some backlink generating campaigns but just watch out for question techniques. Search engines will lower your rankings if you try anything black-hat.

Also, set up Google/Bing/Yahoo Webmaster tools and tweak your settings there (country/region location, sitemap.xml upload, etc.) There are a number of free SEO online tools that also analyze your content and give you ideas on where to improve. Just make sure you dont spam with keywords. Monitor site analytics to see which keywords give higher traffic and better conversions. And make updates on a regular basis (every few weeks) to stay on top of your rankings. Good luck.
