How is vm ware server for server virtualization?

We're thinking of virtualizing our servers, and I saw that vmware offers a free download of vmware server to try. Does vmware offer quality server virtualization option? What other vendors offer good server virtualization?

Dan,
VMware, Microsoft, and Citrix are the three top virtualization vendors though VMware is definitely the industry leader. When you start thinking virtualization there are two common ways to deploy:
1) A bare metal hypervisor that is installed directly on the hardware
2) Virtualization software installed as an application on top of the OS (Windows or Linux or Mac OS X)

VMware and Microsoft both have products that will install both of these ways. Typically, for server consolidations, the bare metal hypervisor is the one that is used. VMware (ESXi) and Microsoft (Hyper-V) both offer their bare metal hypervisors for free but depending on how many physical servers you plan to use and your redundancy needs you may also need to purchase management software to get all the features you need.

VMWare is top of the line. Microsoft and Citrix are behind the curve and probably always will be compared to VMWare since virtualization is their sole specialty. I've been using all 3 company's products for several years. Microsoft and Citrix have simpler and less expensive solutions up front to get started, but down the line they are awkward for change management compared to VMWare.
