If the stats are correct, Black Friday was good all over the nation. The truth, however, will only be known after the holidays are over and the totals for Jan through June are added up.
One of the things that often happens when "special" deals are offered is bunching up of sales that would occur anyway over the next few months but not raising overall sales much if at all. Cash for Clunkers, for example, bunched new car sales, leaving the automotive industry in a sales valley after the program was terminated. When that happens, we see the spike in sales but must wait to see how many of those sales were simpley moved up to take advantage of the big deals. I don't think the jury is in on that question yet.
If sales hold up during first and second quarters next year, we may be able to say that Black Friday was a success.
The back of my SUV on Friday night proved to me that my spouse found success...that and the fact that I did not see her for almost 24 hours! While this is not a major economic indicator, I am happy she uses cash......
