How would you characterize virtualization for 2010 and what can we look forward to in 2011?

How would you characterize the adoption of desktop virtualization in 2010? What were some challenges and what were some triumphs? What are some things to look for in desktop virtualization in 2011?

2010 was a year in which many companies increased their level of virtualization and many companies tinkered with Virtual Desktop Pilots or POCs.

In 2011 I expect companies to continue to virtualize their production workloads and to begin to implementing virtualization aware management tools including cloud tools. Management and automation are the next wave of key applications needed to drive higher consolidations levels and to reduce administration costs. Also I expect companies to begin utilizing chargeback models so the business units can better understand their cost of computing.

On Desktop Virtualization I expect many companies that are currently going down that path to continue to deploy and expand their VDI. I also expect more companies to investigate and examine their potential savings. For anyone going through the evaluation process I recommend a VDI assessment that can look at your current physical plant and then map it to a virtualized environment. The assessment will provide a clear understanding of the sizing necessary and can also take a detailed look at your current software and desktop images for better management.

At RES Software, we saw clear indications that a hybrid approach to desktop virtualization took hold in 2010. Customers are finally realizing that one size does not fit all when it comes to DV and that a single architecture (i.e. VDI, Client Hypervisor, etc.) will not cover all their requirements and use cases. Rather, they will need to use multiple application and desktop delivery approaches (both virtual and physical) to support their users. This raises a new question which is, "How will customers manage and automate hybrid desktop virtualization environments?" For an answer to this question, please see the following blog post:
