If a VoIP provider you never heard of offered free voice service, would you switch from your telco?

As in life, you get what you pay for. Are you willing go with a free service for something as vital as telephony for your business?

No. That is from experience.

I used an online fax service a few years back and they went out of business leaving me with limited fax capability for a few weeks.

VoIP is so new that providers are coming and going all the time. I signed up to a few "free" services only to disconnect because they were after money - FreeCall being one of them.

The advice that I give here is to check their credentials and backing. If they list backers then contact them and check them out. If they list customers then contact them and find out how happy, or otherwise, they are with the service. Also. pay close attention to their small print.

I completely agree and would never switch completely. As a manufacturer we are working to certify SIP service providers constantly, and they really are turning up everywhere. There are a few of the top guys that we feel very confident with. Some, like Broadvox, will even allow you to "test" a line or two for 30 days.

Whether you are looking to switch from traditional PSTN or from one SIP provider to another, I would always get in a couple of lines for testing on a limited-time, non-contractual basis first.

THEN, you have to worry about the credibility of the company, are they going to stay around a long time, etc. Just be cautious of this stuff.
