Is improving employee morale an outdated concept?
With all the talk about employee engagement encompassing job satisfaction and motivation, why do we not hear anymore about morale? Is improving employee morale an outdated concept?
This question is from Charlie Judy's presentation during the Focus Interactive Summit: The New HR
Charlie Judy Answered: I think "engagement" is an evolved "morale." Engagement drives positive morale. But it is more dynamic because it is a measure of 1) an employee's sense of connection with and affiliation to an organization as well as 2) their intent to stay and put forth discretionary effort.

Morale is extremely important. High morale brings high productivity, job and/or organizational loyalty and a better work ethic.
Low morale, well it brings just the reverse.
Improvements to morale can run the gamut, from "parties" and "lunches", to perks, raises (or just keeping your job when you know the company is doing poorly). Morale boosts should be looked at on an individual, department/division and company basis.
Just because you do a morale booster for the company for instance, doesn't mean one for a division or individual may not be needed as well.
